During America’s race to the Moon, brilliant Black women mathematicians, engineers and “human computers” at NASA helped make space history possible. Women such as Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Christine Darden, and many other Black women performed complex calculations, analyzed flight data and advanced aerospace research. Katherine Johnson’s calculations were especially critical to spacecraft trajectories and the Apollo missions that ultimately carried astronauts to the Moon. Working through both racism and sexism, these women helped America reach beyond Earth while opening doors for generations of Black scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
